Helm to Retire from Ozarka College

Published on February 9, 2016

Ron Helm, Ozarka College Vice President of Student Services, has announced his upcoming retirement. Helm has dedicated forty-two years of his life to education; twenty-three of those at Ozarka College. Anyone in this region and beyond would be hard pressed to find a student or colleague who he didn't leave a positive and lasting impression on. Helm has impacted generations of students and will be greatly missed.

Upon completing his Bachelor of Science Education degree in History at Arkansas State University (ASU) in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Helm was hired to teach grades five and six at Oxford Elementary school for the 1972-1973 school year. The next year he returned to ASU to earn his Masters degree in Counseling.

In 1975, Helm was hired to be the Counselor, Psychological Examiner, Social Science Teacher, and Basketball Coach at Naylor Junior and Senior High School in Naylor, Missouri. In 1986, he completed his Specialist degree in Educational Administration from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Helm returned home to Arkansas to serve as the High School Principal at Izard County Consolidated in Brockwell, Arkansas beginning in 1987. After four years, he became the Superintendent and served in that role for two additional years.

In 1993, Helm was hired as the first Registrar for Ozarka College. Over the years, this role developed into the Registrar/Director of Student Services, and ultimately the Vice President of Student Services.

"Ron Helm has been a senior academic leader who people admire and appreciate, " said Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College President. "He is completely committed to the success of our students and will be deeply missed. I've rarely met someone who is so widely respected and known for their service to student success. "

Some of Helm's greatest accomplishments at Ozarka College include being instrumental in creating articulation agreements for transfer to other Colleges and Universities in Arkansas, offering evening courses for both High School students and members of the community, scheduling concurrent enrollment courses in High Schools, assisting with the start up of additional Ozarka campus locations, and partnering with the North Central Unit to offer education in the prison system.

When asked about some of his fondest Ozarka College memories, Helm stated, "Working at an institution that builds confidence in students, and seeing students who didn't think they could make it, succeed. " Helm's retirement plans include spending time with his family, traveling, taking care of the farm, and writing, publishing and producing music.
