Emergency Alert Equipment Installed

Published on April 23, 2015

Yellow boxes with green displays are beginning to appear in the common areas around Ozarka College's Melbourne campus.   These are alert beacons that will be used in the case of an emergency to notify people in common areas of a significant event.   When activated through the College's emergency alert system, the beacon will produce an alert message, flash and emit an alarm similar to a fire alarm.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are also being installed.   According to the device manufacturer's website, "Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can be used to increase the survival rate for Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) up to 75 percent by delivering a life-saving shock within the first few minutes of an attack. "

Dawn Smith, Ozarka College Allied Health Instructor, is providing training for all employees for CPR certification and use of AEDs. Alert beacons and AEDs will be installed on all four Ozarka College campus locations over the next couple of weeks.   These devices were purchased as a part of a comprehensive health and safety initiative with grant funds awarded by the Blue and You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas.
